Welcome to the July edition of Around the Point! We hope everyone is having a great summer so far. Here’s what’s happening around town:

  • Our Building and Community Development departments want to thank town residents for reviewing our website and seeking assistance prior to starting new projects. They’ve enjoyed helping you with your projects and are always here for questions. In case you missed it, both departments celebrated Building Safety Month in May and shared valuable information about permitting, structure safety, licensed contractors, and more – check it out under Latest News.
  • Employment opportunities with the Town can be found at The West Point Police Department is currently seeking applicants for the position of Police Officer 1. 
  • Hurricane Season arrived on June 1st and the tropics are active. Find helpful resources at West Point Town Hall and on the Virginia Department of Emergency Management’s website.
  • West Point Town Hall and DMV Select will be closed Thursday, July 4th and Friday, July 5th in observance of Independence Day. We hope you have a safe and happy July 4th!
  • July 16th is the deadline to sign up for the West Point Volunteer Fire Department’s Regional Fire Academy. Learn more at
  • With school out for the summer, there’s increased foot and bike traffic around town. Please be mindful and cautious while driving.
  • The West Point Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 8am to Noon at The Pavilion at Riverwalk Park. Thank you to our community for your support of the market – we’ve had a tremendous year with growth in vendors and visitors and look forward to the second half of the season.   • We’ve enjoyed seeing our community have fun at Food Trucks by the River! Our next one is July 19th and will feature Wayne Ruotolo, Gauthier Vineyard, Sno-to-Go, True Blue BBQ, and Salty Bob’s Oyster & Seafood Co.   • The Chamber’s next Jammin’ On the Point is Friday, July 12th at 6pm and will feature Ella Wagner and Small Town Burger. Jammin’ events are free with adult beverages available for purchase. Thank you to Ella who joined the Chamber for a recent on-air interview with NBC12 about all of our town events.
  • The West Point Police Department and West Point Volunteer Fire Department have planned an exciting 2nd Annual National Night Out this year! Save the date – Tuesday, August 6th at 6pm – and check out the event on Facebook for all the fun details.
  • Our 16th Annual Chesty Puller Memorial Twin Bridge 10K was a great success. We experienced record participation and welcomed over 230 runners to West Point. A sincere thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, community partners, law enforcement and EMS personnel, town staff, and all who helped make the event successful. Check out photos from this year’s race and save the date for our 17th Annual Chesty Puller 10K – Saturday, June 21, 2025.
  • Planning is underway for the 42ndAnnual West Point Crab Carnival, and volunteers are needed. Visit the Chamber’s website to submit your interest form.
  • The 2024-2025 Arts Alive Concert Series has been announced. Season tickets go on sale to the public August 1st. Visit Arts Alive’s website for details.
  • Our kayak rental kiosk at West Point Creek has been active, and we’re glad you're enjoying our waterways. Learn more about all there is to see in our rivers here and be sure to follow safety guidelines before you launch.

Finally, as you enjoy outdoor activities this month, be sure to stay hydrated and safe. Whether you're working out or spending a day on the river, take care of yourself and those around you by following proper safety guidelines.
